A Facebook page, also known as a fan page, is like your social networking blog. Even if you have a website, your own blog and daily Facebook profile active, it is helpful to build a Facebook page.
Why? There are several reasons why, but I will be mentioning just two. Why, because Facebook pages are known to rank high in search engines. And also, unlike your normal Facebook profile, you can build an unlimited number of followers and an audience for your business.
Anyone with a Facebook account can build a page for anything. It may be about your profession, a special interest you have, a product or service you want to promote, or your company. To the degree that you do not violate any rules, the range is virtually unlimited.
To categorize the endless variety of topics that can be created, Facebook has different types of pages tailored to your particular agenda.
- Local Business or Place
- Company, Organization, Institution
- Brand or Product
- Artist, Band or Public Figure
- Cause or Topic
Each type of page has a drop-down list of categories. Look under the type of page you would be allowed to belong to and choose the category that best suits you. For example, for my digital marketing company, Techynista, my choice of type of page could be: “Blog,” “Education or Institution.”

Since most of my clients are outside and within the region, I can prefer to use “Local” as well. I can choose either “small business” or maybe even “consulting or business services” for “company.” I function under “Website and Marketing” for “Brand or Product.” Or if I want to build myself up, I might go to “Artist, Band or Public Figure,” not because I think I’m a celebrity, but because it has a “business person” category.
The design and features of your page which differ slightly depending on the type of page and the category you choose. So make sure you choose the right one to suit your purpose of creating one.
